Fitzhugh Mullan was, in the sixties, a college student on the eve of the New Frontier, a political activist in the civil rights struggle, an idealist with feet planted firmly in the soil of practicality. Wanting to help, he knew, was not enough. He had to have the skills with which to help. So Mullan chose a career in medicine. What he found there shocked him daily and frequently shook his resolve. The standard medical school curriculum was~and is~ geared less to teaching the skills necessary to a practicing physician than to rewarding feats of memory. Why, Mullan argues, begin medical training with a cadaver in a lab rather than prenatal care in the clinic? Why shock the young doctor with death when one can awe him with life? Mullan recognized the strengths of an apprentice system that enabled the student to learn from the intern, the intern from the resident, and so on up the line to the experienced physician. He appreciated the necessity of the grueling internship that exhausted and exploited the novice, but forced him to learn and grow and adapt. But Mullan could not, and still cannot, overlook the blatant gaps in medical training. Death and sex were the twin taboos. Students were taught to recognize death, but never to deal with it in a humane way. Similarly, they were never trained to cope with a patient's sexual problems or their own sexual feelings in treating patients. If as a student he was dissatisfied with his training, as a professional Dr. Mullan was outraged at the quality of care and the conditions he discovered when he began to practice. He had little tolerance for doctors who cared more for the rewards of medicine than its healing power, and early on he promised himself that his Hippocratic oath would not become a vow of hypocrisy. He helped found the Student Health Organization, organized the controversial Medical Collective at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx, took on the New York medical establishment, and struggled to offer improved medical care to those who needed it most and could afford it least. But Mullan's story is more than a political manifesto or an impassioned plea for reform in the medical profession. It is a dramatic tale of life and death, of sleepy midnight deliveries, of tense treatments that kept an enchanting imp of a child alive for a few days at a time, of grim tragedies that made Mullan question his work and his worth, and of triumphs that made him proud to be a doctor and grateful to be alive. Teeming with the life of a big city hospital, as timely as the current investigations of the medical profession, White Coat, Clenched Fist is a probing autobiography of a young man, an insightful portrait of a generation, and an impartial indictment of America's most indispensable, admired, and unchecked profession. FITZHUGH MULLAN, the son and grandson of physicians, grew up in New York and was graduated from Harvard and the University of Chicago Medical School. Bookseller Inventory # 9251201
