About this Item

First Edition (so stated). 8vo: [10], 355, [1]pp. Publisher's light blue cloth, the spine lettered in silver, the top edge stained grey, the fore-edge untrimmed; in an illustrated dust jacket priced $2.50. A Near Fine copy, tight, clean, and very lightly read, but sun-faded, the spine heavily so, though with no apparent diminution of the silver lettering; in a Near Fine or better jacket, with light edge wear. Inscribed, signed, and dated (December 14, 1977, San Francisco) by the author on the half title page. Boyle lived for shorter periods in villages outside Paris and in the South of France, then spent three decisive years (1933-1936) in Austria, where she wrote 'The White Horses of Vienna,'' which examines the rise of Nazism in in that country. She won widespread critical acclaim when the story won the O. Henry Award for best short story of the year. The following year, it was included in her fourth volume of short fiction, and today The White Horses of Vienna, stands as one of her most renowned pieces of work. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.
