About this title

Synopsis:

Argues that white males are handicapped by reverse discrimination when applying for jobs, scholarships, contracts, and school admissions

From Booklist:

The last several years have seen a number of books with high-minded arguments on either side of the debate over affirmative action. Here, Whitaker seems to be rallying the troops already opposed to affirmative action by cataloging a number of cases of egregious reverse discrimination. Many critics, like Whitaker, argue that they only oppose quotas and preferential treatment; they favor merit selection and hiring. But by also taking on multicultural programs and belittling attempts to encourage respect for diversity, their arguments often belie other feelings. Whitaker "exposes" female and minority preferences, race-and gender-based recruitment, race-based scholarships, race-normed aptitude test scores, quotas, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. He also includes 45 full-page cartoons in order to "place the readers into the virtual reality of a white male victim." To many, they will seem simply mean spirited. Still, this volume will prove useful for libraries needing material on both sides of an important issue. David Rouse
