Synopsis: As one walks with the ghosts amid the hills and through the gullies of old Volcano, reminders of many layers of history are everywhere: Miles of plastic tubing alongside rusting iron pipe lines that in some instances are grown around by trees, remains of old oaken gathering reservoirs some of which have been chopped down to half size by modern chain saws, old byways interspersed with roads widened and/or paved for the convenience of the automobile, ruinous ruts of four-wheeler trails washed deep into wagon routes, old dump sites displaying shards of old China and blue mason jars peeking through forested topsoil and the stark ugliness of modern junk (old tires and discarded refrigerators) along stream beds and in long abandoned cellar holes. Then there is the stillness of the reforested hills which were once denuded and alive with the sounds, the sights and the smells of an awakening oil industry. At the very onset the serious researcher has to become aware of these layers of history and of the fact and fiction. The fiction is generated by faulty memories from modern times accepted as fact for a much earlier period. History is a matter of constant change. So it is with Volcano. It is not the concern of this volume to concentrate on the oil industry but to focus on the people who lived and worked in Volcano.
