About this Item

The second American printing, dated 1911 to both title and copyright pages, following the even harder-to-find 1910 American first, but reportedly still preceding the Heinemann U.K. first by one day. The author's first novel. This copy "good only" with three of the four board corners poking through the cloth, and substantial fraying to head of spine, but appears to be complete. (Whether there was once an additional blank between final page of text and the rear free endpaper we can't be sure.) Pale blue stamped titles and peacock device to spine and front board still visible, though considerably faded. Curious tape ghosts to rear endpapers, though no actual glue residue. These may be from an earlier jacket protector, if in fact this 1911 edition ever had a jacket. Warm (non-authorial) gift inscription to "Edith" dated Feb. 19, 1922 to FFE, and the facing fixed endpaper bears the bookplate of Edith Ellsworth Kinsley, who in 1939 was to write the book "Pattern for Genius; A Story of Branwell Bronte and His Three Sisters, Charlotte, Emily and Ann, largely told in their own words," published that date by E.P. Dutton and itself now somewhat hard to find. "The White Peacock" is in three "Parts" and at pg. 359 (beginning of the third part) previous owner has written in ink in a small hand "Do not read part III if you wish to find this book one (of) the most beautiful of English novels," signed "E.M.K." (not E.E.K.) / "Oneida Hospital / March 1922." Small bookseller label to rear pastedown of Brentano's, New York. 496 pp. Reduced from $1,600. Bookseller Inventory # 003889
