About this Item

SS Olympic stationary. One page, as shown in the scan, is of this rare stationary from the SS Olympic, also known as the RMS Olympic, which is the sister ship to the ill fated SS Titanic and the somewhat limited in life SS Britannic. The Olympic was the only ship of the three to have a long life; eg the Olympic was known as "The Old Reliable". Launched on October 20th, 1910, before it's larger but ill fated sister ship, the SS Titanic, the SS Olympic was ready for duty on 31 May 1011, the same day the SS Titanic was launched. The maiden trip for the Olympic was to New York where she arrived in a record speed of 5 days,16 hours and 42 minutes. The fifth journey accross the Alantic was not successful in that she collided with the HMS Hawke, causing considerable damage to both ships. In her repairs a Titanic's propeller shaft was used to repair the Olympic. When the Titanic was on her way to New York and hit the iceberg the Olympic was 500 miles away heading back to England. She was not able to get to the Titanic's help in time. During WWI the Olympic was used as a troop ship and had many adventures including the ramming and sinking of U-203, a German submarine. Following the war while in dry dock they discovered a dent below her hull's waterline, and it was concluded to have been caused by a torpedo that had failed to detonate. After the war she was returned to service and finally by 1935 she was sold for scrap. Many of the ships beautiful fittings were sold and are displayed as sample displays of the Titanic's interior. This piece of stationary survived those glorious days of service to the White Star Lines. Bookseller Inventory # ABE-1151062785
