About this title

Synopsis:

Designed for young readers, this book is an informative study of the first real Americans before Columbus.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 4-6 Krensky provides an overview of the settlement and exploration of North America, beginning with Asian nomads who followed game across the Bering Strait 40,000 years ago and con tinuing through Columbus, Cabot, and Vespucci. Theories and evidence of other discoveries are presented: e.g., Asian seafarers in South America, Vi king explorations to present-day New foundland, and the European explora tions. Details of life in the various time periods reveal the motivations for trav el, such as the search for food, wealth, and new trade routes; banishment; etc. A light-handed writing style and spa cious format make the information widely accessible. Full-page black-and- white drawings and maps elucidate the text. Although this doesn't provide in- depth information about explorers, stu dents wanting a broad perspective may find it useful. Americans Before Co lumbus (Viking, 1951; o.p.) covers a similar time period in greater depth for older students. Nancy Kewish, Cuya hoga County Public Library, Cleveland
