Synopsis: Boyds Mills Press publishes a wide range of high-quality fiction and nonfiction picture books, chapter books, novels, and nonfiction

From School Library Journal: PreSchool-K-- These books share a similar question-and-answer format. One page poses a query (e.g., ``Who lives in the bushes?''), and the next one shows the illustrated response (`` `We do,' say the deer.''). Each title covers a dozen or so occupations ( Job ) or habitats ( Woods ). The rhythm of the text and the fact that both books conclude with the responses of children make these faintly reminiscent of a Brown Bear, Brown Bear / Over in the Meadow melange, although they fall short of those classics in quality and charm. The colored pencil and wash illustrations in Job are bright but bland--it's a neat and tidy world these folks live in. The full palette of watercolors in Woods is attractive. The former portrays a diverse population in its backgrounds, but only 2 of the 12 workers are non-white. The careers are about equally split (not necessarily along traditional lines) between male and female, and nonsexist job titles are used (``mail carrier,'' ``police officer,'' etc.), but the women tend to look alike. Go for Woods if there is a need for very basic information on the subject; skip Job in favor of something more representative. --Nancy Palmer, The Little School, Bellevue, WA
