About this Item

First edition. Hardcover in violet silk cloth stamped in gilt, 9" x 11", 544 pp. Very special, unique early baseball book--the original, first edition of Speed Johnson's "Who's Who In Baseball" the oversized hardcover edition (the only Who's Who ever issued in this format). IT WAS THE PERSONAL COPY OF BOSTON RED SOX OWNER AND HALL OF FAME MEMBER THOMAS A. YAWKEY, with his name embossed on the front cover in gilt. Illustrated on virtually every page with photographs of individual players in both leagues, owners, umpires, old timers, sportswriters, etc. Each player photograph is accompanied by a biographical sketch. Virtually every notable player and pitcher is featured on his own page including all the then-playing Hall of Famers: Ruth, Foxx, Gehrig, Cronin, Cochrane, Mack, etc as well as the Old Timers such as Cobb, Mathewson, Plank, Cy Young. Speaker, Evers, Tinker, Clarke, Honus Wagner, Lajoie, Walter Johnson, Grover Alexander, Ed Delahanty, Addie Joss and many more. CONDITION: general wear and rubbing about the edges, tips and spine ends, some heavier wear at the rear outer gutter, a few pages here and there have short tears in the margins. There are fake ink signatures on Lou Gehrig, Hank Greenberg and Walter Johnson's pictures. Two players (Bob Seeds and Joe Sewell) have their lips traced in ink (maybe Mr. Yawkey didn't like them!).
