Approx. 11.5" x 9.25" Broadside. One center fold. Very good condition. This is an 1864 Republican broadside containing excerpts from a speech purportedly made by Alexander Stephens, Vice President of the Confederate States of America, during the Georgia Secession Convention January 31, 1861. Stephen's biographers, Johnston and Brown, called it "a mere forgery. contrived for political purposes" (Life of Alexander H. Stephens, 1878, p. 383). The American Antiquarian Society (AAS) states that the bottom line of the broadside "For Sale by all News Agents. Price, $1 per 100" is typographically identical to lines in several Republican broadsides. The A.A.S. attributes the publication to the National Union Executive Committee, Astor House, 1864.
