About this title

Synopsis:

"The essence of what I want to say in this little book is this: 'You are in charge of your own life, and you should be the only one who decides how you live it. Letting someone else (or some outside force) shove you around is to place your life into the hands of others, who will not love it and take care of it the way you can." This book is dedicated to the proposition that everyone has the inherent right to stand firm against any person or force that threatens to disturb the peace, tranquility or plans to which each person is entitled.

About the Author:

Three days after graduating with a B.A. degree, Richard (Dick) Brackett went straight from David Lipscomb College, where he had spent many hours on stage as an actor, to WSM-TV, where he spent many more hours on camera as a clown. Always one who loved children, Dick was able to relate to them on a whole new level, as an equal. As Bozo the Clown, "The world's Most Famous Clown," Dick was permitted entrée into the minds and hearts of thousands of little people, who wanted nothing more than to be entertained and have a friend to talk to. Bozo filled both of those roles. For ten years, Dick portrayed Bozo the Clown and other characters on a fairly long list of kids' shows on WSM-TV, always in roles that allowed him to relate to the youngsters on a close, personal level. This experience has given him a personal philosophy that has helped him make friends quickly with children. "Many adults could not understand how I could get their children to do whatever I asked them to," he says. "Actually, I never had any special power over the kids. I just became for them what they wanted their parents to be...a big friend who accepted them as more or less equal, albeit much smaller, and helped them have fun, without getting hurt." As a Sunday School teacher and church leader, Dick has used the same approach to help struggling teenagers to find some confidence and strength in themselves to weather the storms of adolescence. Every lesson and activity was underpinned by the idea that we all have in us already whatever we need to succeed in whatever we attempt. All we need to do is know it is there, and call on it when it is needed.
