About this title

Synopsis:

Reveals the Colorado River and the Grand Canyon in 1858 as seen by a Prussian artist in watercolors now at the Amon Carter Museum

From Booklist:

Reproduced here are drawings by Prussian-born Balduin Mollhausen together with his remarkable suite of 46 watercolors dating from the mid-nineteenth century. Discovered just over a decade ago, the paintings record the Ives expedition up the Colorado River and overland to the floor of the Grand Canyon. Huseman contributes a scholarly yet fluent interpretation of the artwork, examining stylistic influences and offering detailed commentary on the development of Mollhausen's artistic output. The account of the expedition itself is especially notable, as is a biographical portrait of Mollhausen, known in Germany primarily as a writer. Mollhausen's humane spirit survives in these naively rendered but moving depictions of Native American life imbued with a great sense of wonder and in picturesque vistas believed to be the earliest visual record of specific southwestern locales.
