About this title

Synopsis:

There was not one single monoplane in squadron service in 1936 when Wilfred Freeman accepted the task of choosing the aircraft with which to rearm the RAF. Freeman's ruthless quest for quality and exceptional organisational ability resulted in the RAF being equipped with a superb range of aircraft from the Spitfire and Lancaster to the Mosquito (Freeman's Folly) and the Merlin-powered Mustang.

About the Author:

Anthony Furse, who is Wilfrid Freeman’s nephew, gained his pilot’s wings in 1945 and flew Spitfires with the RAF in Austria and Italy, and later flew Tempest fighters in the Middle East. After a varied career in industry, commerce, and investment banking, he retired to his home in North Wales in 1990.
