About this Item

small 4to, 18pp (with blank verso's), + 42pp, frontispiece of Death's Door, from Blair's 'The Grave', with 42 fascimile plates, publisher's promotional leaflet loosely inserted, orig. buckram gilt lightly rubbed and sunned, generally a VG+ copy. Limited edition, 86 of 250 copies. This work treats of Blake's Mysticism from a psychological point of view, while the illustrations which are mystical in character are now for the first time reproduced. The following extract from Allen Cunningham's Life of Blake, in his "Lives of British Artists," 1830, shows in what esteem these designs of Blake were held. He writes:- "The work was performed something in the manner of old books, with illuminated margins. Along the ample margins which the poetry left on the page, Blake sketched his fanciful creations, contracting and expanding them according to the space. This work was so much, in many parts, to the satisfaction of Flaxman that he introduced Blake to Hayley.".
