About this Item

Small 4to. Blue cloth with gilt spine lettering. 359pp. Frontispiece, illustrations. Very good. Mild edgewear, with lightly lacquered spine; internally tight and near fine. Tight and nice first edition, a mild and discreet durable ex-library, rebound, with very few and mostly-removed markings. The standard biography of this military medical innovator who pioneered yellow fever and malaria treatments during the Panama Canal construction. Of interest is the large custom Bernhardt Wall-engraved Lincoln-theme bookplate on front pastedown of Ralph G. Newman (1911-2000), founder of Chicago's famed Abraham Lincoln Book Shop -- a stunning example of the engraver's art. Bookseller Inventory # 39473
