About this Item

With a Foreword by Harry B. Wehle, Curator of paintings, Metropolitan Museum of Art. Published for the Metropolitan Museum of Art by Columbia University Press: New York, 1944. Quarto, cloth. Pp.vii, 54, plus 78 monochrome plates on 32 pages, including a General Index and Index to Titles of Paintings by Mount. Presentation inscription from a Miss Cowdrey (author, or author's daughter?) to members of the Douglass family (including Mrs. Scott Kidder, who is mentioned in the Author's Preface), who were relatives of William Sidney Mount. Laid in are a presentation slip from the publisher, an invitation, with original envelope, by the President and Trustees of the Metropolitan Museum of Art to a private viewing of a Special Exhibition of Paintings and Drawings by William Sidney Mount in 1945, and the slender eight-page catalogue of the exhibition. There is a very light dampstain along bottom edge of text block, just barely visible from the title-page on. A very good copy of the First Edition. Also laid in are six pages (3 leaves of lined and very browned paper) of a holograph manuscript in pencil, comprising an interesting and knowledgeable text on the artist. An illuminating and somewhat exhaustive first study of William Sidney Mount, one of the most important and early genre painters on the American scene to achieve national prominence. This study omits only his portraits, and includes a catalogue of 168 items, an annotated bibliography, and appendices for imitations, tentative attributions and copies, and a Checklist of Prints after Mount.
