Synopsis: From his apartment window, which has a view of downtown Manhattan - in particular of the World Trade Center site - one photographer documents the changing patterns of life in New York City before and after September 11, 2001. From his window on the 26th floor overlooking Eighth Avenue in New York City, Reiner Leist has a view not unlike that of many urban buildings: the facades of neighbouring buildings, the bustle of people, the steady parade of trucks, buses and cars. Seen day after day through the lens of his antique large-format camera, Leist's view takes on a new and poignant perspective. In all, Leist has taken more than 2,000 photographs over more than a decade. This book presents a selection of Leist's photographs from the months of September 1995 through 2005, recording the transformation of New York's famous skyline as seen over the course of eleven Septembers.

About the Author: Reiner Leist's books include South Africa: Blue Portraits and American Portraits (Prestel). He teaches visual art at Hunter College in New York City. Jonathan Santlofer is an artist and a novelist, who lives in New York City. Ludger Derenthal is the director of the Museum for Photography in Berlin.

Book Description Preste, Germany, 2006. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. WE SPECIALIZE IN PHOTOGRAPHY BOOKS. From the shelf in our private library. 512 pages, with essays by Ludger Derenthal and Jonathan Santlofer. Illustrated with 249 duotone photos. From his 26th floor window Reiner kept an eleven year photographic watch over part of downtown Manhattan through the lens of his large format antique camera, documenting the city as it lived and changed. No artist however visionary could have forseen the transformation that occured on September 11th 2001. That fateful summer, Leist was away from the city. Watching the drama on TV he returns and reactivates his camera when the ash was still settling. 'His' landscape has now been charged by omission. The whole 'deserves a patient and careful reading which will be rewarded by a new perception of photography and time'. Very heavy book. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Bookseller Inventory # P23046
