Synopsis: Marty, an unhappy thirteen-year-old girl, finds solace from her painful family life in the company of Windsong, a misfit greyhound puppy that Marty rescues and must hide from her parents. Bu the author of Dagmar Schultz and the Green-Eyed Monster.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 6-8-- Marty, 13, escapes the turmoil of her unhappy home by helping a neighbor with his greyhound kennel. She becomes attached to a runt puppy, whom she names Windsong. The kennel owner cannot afford to keep dogs that lack racing potential, and Marty's parents won't allow her to bring the pup home due to her spoiled brother's allergies. Desperate to keep her pet from being exterminated, Marty persuades an elderly neighbor to take the dog in, but is later rebuffed in her attempts to keep her own relationship with Windsong alive. Hall paints a poignant and tender picture of the adolescent and her struggles to cope with her changing world in the small Missouri town in which she lives. Marty discovers her mother is having an affair with a store-front preacher, and she must decide what to do with the information. She is tempted to confront her father in hopes that the family will split up, perhaps enabling her to regain Windsong, yet she knows that the hurt involved would outweigh the apparent benefit. A great deal of information about dog breeding and kennels is interwoven smoothly into the story. The tone is never melodramatic or sappy, but Hall confronts the pain of Marty's situation head-on and resolves it in a satisfying way. --Joyce Adams Burner, formerly at Spring Hill Middle School,
