About this Item

Patent attorney Mertz, who earlier published an account ("Pale Ink") of the voyages of the Chinese to the west coast of the Americas, here offers geographic evidence that the Odyssey described by Homer took Odysseus not just to the Straits of Messina (off Sicily), but as far as Newfoundland's Bay of Fundy. While further evidence of the Chinese voyages of the early 15th Century has indeed been forthcoming, Ms. Mertz's Homerian theory has not been widely embraced. Dated by the author "Chicago 5 April 1975," above which she has written "Inscribed especially for Philip Jose Farmer with best wishes / Henriette Mertz." Farmer (1918-2009) was best known as author of the "Riverworld" series; critic Leslie Fiedler compared him to Ray Bradbury, identifying both as "provincial American eccentrics" who "strain at the classic limits of the (science fiction) form," but found Farmer distinctive in that he "manages to be at once naive and sophisticated in his odd blending of theology, pornography, and adventure." 180 pp. including notes and bibliography. Reduced from $4,000. Bookseller Inventory # 004408
