Harper's Weekly: A Journal of Civilization.(Old Periodicals, 19th Century Newspapers, Americana, Harper's Weekly, Civil War, Illustrated Newspapers, Winslow Homer, U. S. Arsenal, Hagerstown, Harper's Ferry, The Pirates, Virginia Bird's Eye View). Issued July 20th, 1861, New York, by Harper & Brothers. An actual piece of American history issued during the Civil War. Filled with commentary and wood engraved images relating to that war and issued contemporary to the events. Original mid-19th century weekly newspaper. An actual, complete newspaper published at the date listed, not a modern re-issue. During this period, this journal was a major, influential national publication which employed many of the top artists of the era. Paper uniformly age toned as typical, some pages loose. Issue was once bound up in a volume and is now free-standing and complete unto itself as originally issued. Nice looking, clean, well preserved example, pages loosened, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive. Text on reverse of each page as always, images and maps from Harper's like this are often offered separately for display. Newspaper measures c. 16" H x 11" W. Periodical will be shipped gently rolled in a sturdy 3" wide tube to ensure it arrives safely to you! Multiple issues purchased at the same time will be shipped flat.[B11115]. The full front page is a print of: "Filling Cartridge at the U. S. Arsenal at Watertown, Mass." done by famed artist Winslow Homer. Other prints within include 5 scenes of: "The Eleventh Indiana Regiment of Zouaves, Colonel L. Wallace", and another full page with 8 prints of: "Scenes About Camp". A half page shows: "Hagerstown, Maryland, with Mc Mullin's Rangers in the Foreground" and also: "Major Knipe Winging a Secessionist". Five prints of Harper's Ferry, plus a very nice & dramatic double page centerfold of: "The Navy-Yard at Brooklyn, New York". Another half page shows: "Reading the War Bulletins in Broadway, New York" and: "The Secessionist Army--Irregular Riflemen of the Alleghanies, Virginia" plus a full page of: "The Pirates". There is a full page showing a: "Balloon View of the Seat of War" and smaller prints of "Major-General Patterson" and "Speaker Grow" and a half page of: "Military Occupation of Monument Square, Baltimore, by the U. S. Artillery.". The back page has 6 cartoonish prints relating to the Civil War. Also included is a serialized portion of "Great Expectations", by Charles Dickens. Seller Inventory # B11115
