First editon. Dark brown cloth with spine lettering gilt; frontis engraving of Rev. Smith. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR AND DATED AT NEW YORK, JUNE 4, 1856, ON A TIPPED IN BLANK LEAF. 458 pps. with index; 10 pps. of publisher's ads. Folding facsimile mss. page. A tight, firm copy, faded portion to the front cover, foxed throughout and with a shallow crescent tidemark to the lowre edge of the text block not touching the text. Sopine lettering stil quite clear. Sydney Smith (1771-1845) was an English writer and divine known for his wit and gaiety. He was oft quoted and London society sought his company. Several of his quotes appear in Bartlett. Bookseller Inventory # E319
