310 pages, frontis, photos, slight browning to a few page edges, rare dust jacket is good only with chipping to edges, all text present, but a very early jacket. Signed by the author and publisher, George Wharton James. The author was a California writer and journalist who in 1864 married Army Lieutenant James A. Clifford in New Mexico. Her husband confessed to killing a man in Texas and threatened to kill her also if she told. After he was placed under guard, she fled to San Francisco. The first part of the book deals with her life as an army wife on the frontier. Forts Union, Leavenworth, Cummings, Bayard, overland travel, Indians, etc. Bookseller Inventory # 014702
