About this title

Synopsis:

Book by Urdang, Constance

From Library Journal:

Urdang is the author of five books of poetry and five other novellas, including the well-received Lucha (Coffee House Pr., 1986). This latest publication continues her thematic focus on women, particularly women in the family. Initially, Ruby, the central character of "The Woman Who Read Novels," appears to break from that pattern. We first encounter her as an elderly woman, alone and reflecting on the failure of her youthful dreams. But Ruby's dreams are of the fulfillment of family life that she has failed to achieve, and that failure blinds her to her options. The starkness of this story is balanced by "Peacetime," whose numerous characters move backward and forward in time in a spiral rather than linear movement that Urdang carefully controls. The poet in Urdang shapes her prose with grace and economy. These qualities, combined with her inventive use of a none-too-popular format, earmark the work for comprehensive fiction collections.
