The volumes have no dates on the Title Pages but the frontispiece engraving of a man flying on a bird's back - "The Art of Lying Burlesqued in an Account of "A Wonderful Flight or Journey from France to Gibraltar, America, &c." is dated 1793 at the bottom. I believe that this is the First Edition. The next printing is called "The New Wonderful Magazine" as is volumes 2 through 5 in this set. These articles were originally issued in separate numbers. The next full page engraving - for issue No. 1 is of Henry Jenkins of Ellerton in Yorkshire who died at the age of 169. Next is "Old Boots of Rippon in Yorkshire" shown with his ability to hold a coin between the tips of his nose and chin. Next is the "Massacre and Execution of Louis XVI". Next is a fold-out engraving (8-1/2 inches by 11 inches) of "Margaret Finch, Queen of the Norwood Gypsies, Died 1740, Aged 108 Years". Next is the "Portrait of Mr. Edward Bright of Malden in Essex who weighed Five Hundred, one Quarter, and twenty-one pounds". There are a total of 21 engravings in Vol. 1 some of which have the title "Wonderful Magazine" slightly cropped at the top of the letters. Some of the engravings in Volume 2 have waterstains. The text pages measure 4-7/8 inches by 8 inches. The covers measure 5-1/4 inches by 8-1/4 inches. There may be 4 or 5 engravings that are lacking. They may have never been bound-in since nothing seems to have been removed. In the instructions to the binder for placing the engravings (found at the end of volume 5) some plates that should be in some volumes are placed in another volume. Volume 1 has a 4 page Preface and 512 pages with 21 engraved plates. Volume 2 starting at Issue No. 13 has 480 pages and 15 engraved plates. Volume 3 has 480 pages and 8 engraved plates. Volume 4 has 478 pages and 14 engraved plates. Volume 5 has 456 pages and 13 engraved plates. The pages are clean, still crisp and are tightly bound. There is occasional foxing. All 5 books are bound in matching, about late 1800's 3/4 brown leather with green cloth boards. 2 red leather labels on each spine have the magazine title and the volume number. The covers and spines are clean and tightly attached with very good, unworn and unbumped edges. There are no ownership inscriptions or bookplates. Volume 3 has an article on a case of spontaneous combustion - what they call "A very remarkable instance of Death by Internal Fire". There is also a fold-out engraving of a boxing match between Humphries and Mendoza. A very presentable set. Bookseller Inventory # 9857
