About this Item

This is a beautiful and very well-cared-for example of this book. Bound in the original, publisher's ivory embossed cloth, with still bright gilt lettering and gilt decorations on the spine, and a bright gilt decoration of a girl in a garden, on the front cover. Both the complete spine and the covers have very good, unworn and unbumped edges. The covers are perfectly attached with no cracking, either internally or externally. One corner has a very small fray, without exposing the underlying cardboard. There is a small and unobtrusive bookseller's blindstamp on the frontpaper, and a small and lightly pencilled ownership inscription of three words on the second frontpaper. The 142 pages are very clean, are still crisp, and are tightly bound, with a few small brown spots. "Translated from the Danish by Mary Howitt". The 10 stories are: Ole Luckoie, (Shut-Eye) - The Story Teller at Night; The Daisy; The Naughty Boy; Tommelise; The Rose-Elf; The Garden of Paradise; A Night in the Kitchen; Little Ida's Flowers; The Constant Tin Soldier; The Storks. This first American printing does not have illustrations. The spine reads "Wonderful Stories For Children", with no author given. The author's name is spelled "Anderson" on the title page.
