Illustrations include the opening of the railway as depicted in The Illustrated London News, September 2, 1876, Shanghai Harbor and Waterfront about 1876, the locomotive Pioneer as first constructed, the Pioneer after modification, the arrival of equipment at Woosung, the Pioneer being carried for its first test run in China, the locomotive Celestial Empire, the Celestial Empire and wagons, Fisler's photograph of the official opening, the Celestial Empire heading the opening day train, three advertisements from the North China Daily News, July 3 and 17, and November 30, 1876, a four - carriage train at the Woosung terminus, the locomotive Viceroy, a portrait of Gabriel James Morrison in 1901 when President of the Shanghai Society of Engineers, and maps of Shanghai about 1876, and the Huangpoo River from Shanghai to the Yangtze Kiang near Woosung.
