About this title

Mastery of a good vocabulary, more than any other skill, allows us to command the immediate recognition and respect of those with whom we have contact in school or at work. Our written or spoken words are the basis for the first impression we make on those around us. The quality of the words we use provides the easiest reference point for others to reach quick conclusions about our intelligence and capabilities. To aid in this regard, John H. Buck has selected close to five hundred words for presentation in this informative and educational book. In it, the author provides easy to understand definitions while demonstrating how each word can be used. As a guidebook to a better vocabulary and handy reference tool, it can become a vital asset in all walks of life. "The real point of this book," writes the author, "is to enable you to enrich yourself in a tangible way by advancing more quickly in school or performing more effectively in your job, business, or profession and reaping the related economic rewards."

About the Author:

John H. Buck was born and reared in Houston, Texas. For three years in the late 1950s, he had the good fortune to be taught by Mr. Basil Fairweather, Senior Instructor in Latin at the St. John's School, who had a gift for imparting to high school students a respect for good words. Mr. Buck received his undergraduate degree from Southern Methodist University in 1964 and, after service in the United States Marine Corps, graduated from Yale Law School in 1970. He practiced law for thirty years in Houston where he was a partner at the firm of Bracewell & Giuliani, and subsequently at the firm of Buck, Keenan, Gage, Little & Lindley. The author and his wife of forty years, Kathleen, live on their farm, located south of Fort Worth, where they raise Angus/Hereford crossbred cattle with assistance of a couple of elderly horses, one indolent and insolent burro, seven dogs, three cats, and an increasing number of grandchildren.
