About this Item

London: The Royal Geographical Society, January 1914. The Geographical Journal, Vol LXIII No 1, 8vo - 24.3cm, 20 pp., 8 black-and-white photographs on four pages, one large fold-out map containing three maps bound at rear. Publisher's printed blue wrappers in Near Fine condition inside and out with mild intermittent foxing. The complete issue - an extraordinary copy Ñ very clean. Very Scarce. This is the pre-publication account of the six-man Northern Party of Scott's Terra Nova Expedition (Scott's Last Expedition) - later in the same year to be published as Antarctic Adventure by Raymond Priestley (Rosove 256.A1). This is Priestley's published account presented to the Royal Geographic Society covering two winters spent at Cape Adare. The detailed paper covers the first winter spent at Cape Adare and the second at Inexpressible Island as well as the journey back to Ross Island to rescue themselves after the second winter. The party's courage, good spirits and tenacity are incredible, notwithstanding the fact that the only other option was to give up and die. The book, as well as this paper provides a gripping read of an amazing adventure. Bookseller Inventory # ASX.312.1
