Book Description W. Thomas Taylor, 1983. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. 158 pp. with index. #193 of 325 copies. 10.75 x 16. Not so much "A Bibliography with Commentary" as an illustrated autobiography, this beautiful book defines the joy of reading. Born in a gardener's humble cottage in Ann Arbor, AW rose to become a MacArthur Fellow and "one of America's leading fine printers" (New York Times) by the time he passed away. His early life is covered in the Introduction, then chapters for each of the presses he worked with. Each title is given a commentary. The creation of the physical book is best described by AW: "handmade paper . . . of Tovil fabricated from cotton and manila [complete with various watermarks]." Inks were "black for the text and for the second color a combination of orange, red, white and a touch of black which I mixed and called Tuscany Red." "Herman Zapf . . . created the hand lettering for my name on the title page. Ansel Adams offered to photograph me for a frontispiece portrait . . . ." The spine is "bound in fine goatskin known as oasis morocco, dyed to match the Tuscany Red ink. The sides are imported Dutch linen . . . [with the spine] stamped in gold with special title page lettering." Samples of his work are tipped-in throughout the text. Lightly-taped cellophane dust jacket over covers with smaller smudge on front and back, slight shelf wear at bottom of spine. Bookseller Inventory # 000795
