About this Item

Two volumes, 8vo. Five engraved folding plates [numbered II-VI, all called for] and two engraved portraits. Contemporary speckled calf. The plates include a large folding depiction of 'Coffee Arabica' illustrating "Extracts from an Historical Account of Coffee, &c." by John Ellis, pp.281-333, including entries on a variety of coffee plants with botanical descriptions. In addition to his work as a physician, the Quaker Fothergill funded the publication of Anthony Purver's Quaker Bible, and his large collection of plants help build the sizeable botanical garden at what is now West Ham Park in London.
