Synopsis: The very titles of Edward Ruscha's works comprise a litany of the funky, laid-back world of California art in our time. Ruscha is, after all, the quintessential West Coast artist. His paintings and pastel drawings of the Hollywood sign, of gasoline stations of 'The Los Angeles County Museum on Fire' and of words-as-objects, are icons of late 20th century Southern California art and lifestyle.
Ruscha's graphic works have extended the boundaries of art through his use of unconventional materials - he has drawn with gunpowder and 'painted' and printed with chocolate paste and other foodstuffs and organic substances. At the same time, his depictions of phrases and words, and the books he himself published of his own serial photographs, helped to establish the foundations of conceptual art.
Now all of Ruscha's finest works in all mediums are brought together in an extraordinary volume designed by the artist himself and published in connection with a major travelling retrospective exhibition organized by the San Francisco Museum of Art.
This book features 62 plates in full color (including 9 single and double foldouts) plus 150 in duotone and black and white. These works are illuminated by several fascinating essays. Also included are complete reference materials on the artist's life and career: a chronology of his life, a complete list of exhibitions, and a selected bibliography.
