London, 1874. Complete set in thirty volumes. Octavos, finely bound by Zaehnsdorf in half morocco over marbled paper with gilt decorated spines, five raised bands, marbled endpapers and page edges. A beautiful, very near fine set with some very light normal shelfwear and some intermittent light foxing. Dickens favorite edition of his collected works. "This the best edition of my books is, of right, inscribed to my dear friend John Forster, biographer of Oliver Goldsmith, in affectionate acknowledgment of his counsel, sympathy, and faithful friendship during my whole literary life." Profusely illustrated by "Phiz" (Hablot Knight Browne), George Cruikshank, Frederick Walker, Edwin Landseer, Daniel Maclise, John Leech, Marcus Stone, George Cattermole, and Luke Fildes. A bright near fine set. Contents very good plus to near fine with some occasional light marginal staining to a few of the later volumes and to Vol. 5, some small marginal tears to a section of ten pages in Vol. 28. Small stain of about 1/4 of an inch to top of pages on Vol. 9. Professional seam repair to two inch section of spine on Vol. 15 at seam, barely visible. Profusely illustrated by "Phiz" (Hablot Knight Browne), George Cruikshank, Frederick Walker, Edwin Landseer, Daniel Maclise, John Leech, Marcus Stone, George Cattermole, and Luke Fildes. Dickens called this " the best edition" of his works and dedicated it to his friend (and later his biographer) John Forster at whose suggestion it was prepared. The Library Edition was published to provide a high quality edition of Dickens? works.
