Demy octavos, [19.5cm/7.75inches] full gilt-embossed teal coloured cloth, sans dust jackets, -as published; each volume indexed. Illustrated with numerous sepia halftones, each tissue-protected. This set is the first 14, of the 23 volume Complete Writings of John Burroughs totals . The first volume, Wake-Robin, was published in 1871 and subsequent volumes were published regularly until the final volume, The Last Harvest, in 1922. The final two volumes, Under the Maples and The Last Harvest, were published posthumously by Clara Barrus. Burroughs also published a biography of John James Audubon, a memoir of his camping trip to Yellowstone with President Theodore Roosevelt, and a volume of poetry titled Bird and Bough. . Riverby was the estate of John Burroughs (1837-1921), who wrote and created a genre of naturalist essays. Riverby is also the title of one of Burrough's books, published in 1904, and is also the name of an edition of his collected works. Burrough's study at Riverby is a National Historic Landmark. The Riverby estate is located above the west bank of the Hudson River, in the town of West Park, in Ulster County, New York. Burroughs bought a 9-acre farm there in 1873, and added additional land later. The estate included a main house, a writing study lower on the slope towards the Hudson River, a building that his son lived in during the years when Burroughs primarily used the study, and other buildings.
