Book Description David Mallet, Publisher. P. Byrne, Printer., Dublin, 1793. Leather. Condition: Poor. Full leather. 563, 515, 561, 647, 600 pp. A collection of essays and letters containing Henry St. John's writings on philosophy, history and politics, including pieces on patriotism, the history of Europe, a dissertation on parties, essays on philosophers and their science (written as letters to Pope), reflections on exile, etc. Henry St. John was a British political philosopher and politician, whose work, according to recent historians, influenced the ideas of Republicanism in the colonists and founding fathers such as John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. POOR condition. Ex-theological institution, with markings on the spines, some blindstamps and markings in the interior. Covers on all five volumes either DETACHED or threatening to detach with any further handling, due to extreme brittleness of the leather. Varying amounts-from minor to heavy-of flaking, chipping, scraping, scuffing and loss to the leather on each volume. A few volumes with front endpapers detached along with the front covers. Minor soiling. Sporadic underlining and writing throughout, with extensive notes at the front of volume 1. Text blocks otherwise solid, despite detached covers or endpapers. Ex-Library.
