With the ownership labels of the Revd John Vaudrey; loosely inserted an autograph letter signed from Nowell Smith to John Butt ("Dear Prof. Bott"), 2pp. 8vo, Oxford, 3 October 1954 - "I am now returning the volume you so kindly sent me. I had no idea of the minute variations in copies of what in general appears to be one & the same edition. My son [Simon Nowell-Smith] has now sent me a copy of the 2 vol. edition of 1859 which is in pagination & even other respects apparently identical with yours except that the publishers on the title page are Longman, Green, Longman, and Roberts, whereas on yours they are Longman, Brown, Green, Longmans, and Roberts - and the type is slightly different . . ."
