About this Item

Folios. Full leather. xxiv, 728; (10), 758, (30); (10), 926; (10), xiv, 740 pp. With a frontis portrait in volume 1. A posthumously published collection of the works of Samuel Clarke, including various sermons, essays on various religious and philosophical matters, etc. Also included are his correspondences with Gottfried Leibniz, as well as his essay concerning the controversy relating to 'the Proportion of Force to Velocity in Bodies in Motion.' Both of these see Clarke elaborate on and defend the views of Sir Isaac Newton, asserting the truth of his principles within a religious framework. Samuel Clarke was an important English philosopher and clergyman of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He translated some of Newton's work into Latin and in general held to various Newtonian beliefs, often defending them in various essays. While his views sometimes subjected him to controversy, he was able to hold his position in the English church (see Wikipedia, the Dictionary of National Biography and other sources). FAIR condition. Ex-theological library. Small bookplates and minor stamping/markings to each book in the interior. Minor to moderate scuffing, uneven darkening and some staining to each of the volumes. Leather very darkened and brittle along the spine, flaking, chipping and deteriorating to various degrees, especially along the hinges, which are cracked and worn. The front covers on each volume are separating, all rather tenuously attached, with the rear covers loosening but a bit stronger. Front endpapers DETACHED in each volume, with a rear endpaper detached in volume 4. Text blocks solid, with minor scattered foxing and spotting. Some soiling to several pages at the rear of the volumes. Bookseller Inventory # 008047
