Illustrated with numerous folding maps, this is a fascinating eighteenth century view of the history of Scotland, South America and India, along with a study of the life of Charles V. The complete works of Church of Scotland minister and historian William Robertson are bound in twelve smart full calf volumes.A significant figure in the Scottish Enlightenment and also of the moderate forces within the Church of Scotland, Robertson was assigned Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1763, and Historiographer Royal in 1764, reviving a role within the Royal household in Scotland that had been in abeyance from 1709 until 1763.Volumes I to III consist of 'The History of Scotland', and begin with an account of his Life and Writings, by Dugald Stewart, with a portrait frontispiece to volume I.Volumes IV to VII detail 'The History of the Reign of the Emperor Charles V', with each volume featuring an engraved frontispiece.Volumes VIII to XI contain Robertson's 'History of America'. Volume VIII features two large folding maps, the first displaying the Gulf of Mexico, and the second a map of South America. Volume IX features a folding map of Mexico under Spanish rule, volume X a folding map of 'The Islands of the South Seas', and volume XI an illustrated folding plate.Finally, volume XII is 'An Historical Disquisition Concerning the Knowledge which the Ancients had of India', and is illustrated with two folding maps of the region. In full calf bindings, with gilt detailing to back strips. Light rubbing to back strips, and board extremities. Front board of vol VIII detached. Rubbing to all joints, with boards holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally clean and bright, with the odd spot. One map from volume XII is detached, but present, with a tear to the top left corner. Very Good.
