About this title

Synopsis:

Part of a trilogy along with The History of the Culture of War and I Have Seen the Promised Land, the most comprehensive and feasible plan ever put forward to achieve world peace. It is based on the author's responsibility for the United Nations International Year for the Culture of Peace (2000), the Manifesto 2000 signed by 75 million people, and the United Nations Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace. It foresees the coming collapse of the global economy and the system of states as an opportunity to refound the United Nations on the basis of those who understand the need for a culture of peace: individuals, civil society organizations and local governments. It provides descriptions of initiatives already underway, as well as approaches that can be used by those who wish to take up the task.

About the Author:

Dr David Adams, since his retirement from UNESCO in 2001, has continued to devote his energies to the Global Movement for a Culture of Peace. In 2001 he established the culture of peace info website (http://www.culture-of-peace.info). In 2002, he established the Culture of Peace News Network (http://cpnn-world.org). And since 2004 he has coordinated the Civil Society Report to the United Nations on the Culture of Peace (http://decade-culture-of-peace.org). These websites have grown to over 10,000 pages of documentation. At UNESCO, he was the Director of the Unit for the International Year for the Culture of Peace, proclaimed for the Year 2000 by the United Nations General Assembly. He had come to UNESCO in 1992 to develop the Culture of Peace Programme as an supplement and alternative to military peacekeeping operations. On behalf of UNESCO he drafted UN documents, including the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace (1999). Previously, at Yale and Wesleyan Universities, he published many studies on the brain mechanisms of aggressive behaviour, the evolution of war, and the psychology of peace activists, and he helped to develop and publicize the Seville Statement on Violence.
