Born in Tasmania and brought to England as a child, married T.H.Ward in 1872, in 1890 founded a settlement in London which developed into Passmore Edwards Settlement. She was an anti-suffragist, becoming the first president of the British Women's Anti-Suffrage League (and her reputation as a writer has suffered for it). She is, nonetheless, a writer of true literary merit, Tolstoy calling her in 1900 the greatest living English author. Bookseller Inventory # 10606
