Description:

8vo. quarter cloth with spine label and patterned paper-covered boards, slipcase. xii, (ii), 127, (3) pages. Designed and printed by Neil Shaver at The Yellow Barn Press in an edition limited to 150 numbered copies. Set in 12-point Monotype Garamond by Michael and Winifred Bixler on a Vandercook Universal III press. Wood engravings and pattern paper for the covers by Sandy Connors. Printed on mouldmade Frankfurt white paper, bound by the Campbell-Logan Bindery. The engraving on the title page is the Church of the Sorbonne. A narrative based on 23,000 diary entries kept by Elmo Shaver (1916-1995) from 1932-1995, ending 3 days before his death. Elmo Shaver spent most of his life in Long Beach, CA, punctuated by more than 30 trips to France. The first trip, in 1937, confirmed him in his life-long Francophilia and chosen career of teaching French. This fascinating account spans almost two thirds of the 20th century. It offers unique testimony of the shadowy world of the gay community before 1970, the decline in popularity of Christian Science, and the pedagogy of teaching in a Southern California junior college. The diary provides direct access to a life from the age of 15, encompassing the student acquiring and the professor imparting education, leisure, and retirement, including detailed records on hundreds of books read between 1931-37. "Readers may identify with Elmo's observations, struggles, personal habits and foibles, such as extreme frugality, ardent Republicanism, and the compulsive demanding of proper English grammar" (publication announcement). Photographs. quarter cloth with spine label and patterned paper-covered boards, slipcase. Bookseller Inventory #
