Seventh printing (as stated upon copyright page). [8], 581 pages. Hardcover: H 19.25cm x L 13.5cm. Dark blue cloth, bottom board corners worn, orange stamped lettering and decoration heavily flaked from front board, short tears and fraying at spine ends, spine's orange stamped lettering almost entirely flaked away and now difficult to discern. Brown top edge; toning and foxing to deckle fore-edge; foxing to bottom edge. Light toning to endpapers; ink ownership inscription on front pastedown; pencil signature of different owner on front free endpaper with brown stain at lower right. Scarce contemporary light yellow rectangular bookseller ticket "Paragon Book Store | School Books & Supplies | Toys, Games, Bibles, Picture Framing | Meridian Mississippi" at front pastedown's top right corner. A few scattered stains to interior pages but, overall, leaves are mostly clean; varied bumping at top margins of pages 253-358 or so. Binding has some slight play but no overt stress points or splits. A good copy. Margaret Ayer Barnes (1886-1967) won the 1931 Pulitzer Prize for this debut novel which was first published in June 1930. Despite the book's quick success, early printings are rather uncommon.
