Illustrated throughout with 8 full color plates and 24 illustrations printed in blue.A very good copy of the very scarce and very fragile first edition of this American classic. Color Illustrations; This is Howard Pyle's First commissioned book. The book is in Very Good condition and was likely issued without a dust jacket. The covers have pastedown illustrations to both front and rear covers. The illustration on the spine of the book has perished, but the spine is still in solid, original condition. There is edge wear, bumping and rubbing to the spine ends, edges and corners. The text pages are mostly clean and bright. There is a previous owner's gift notation on the front endpaper. This copy includes eight full color illustrated plates and numerous pages of monochrome (blue) illustration. Scarce. "Howard Pyle (March 5, 1853 November 9, 1911) was an American illustrator and author, primarily of books for young people. A native of Wilmington, Delaware, he spent the last year of his life in Florence, Italy. In 1894 he began teaching illustration at the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry (now Drexel University). After 1900, he founded his own school of art and illustration, named the Howard Pyle School of Illustration Art. The scholar Henry C.
