Mrs. Likins, her husband and young daughter left their home in Ohio and "joined the westward march to the Golden Gate". Their 1868 journey was an arduous trip with the land crossing taking place in Nicaragua , then up the Pacific Coast to San Francisco. Needing employment she happened upon the already impressive store of Hubert Howe Bancroft and was hired to sell subscription books. She traveled by stage and boat to different parts of California selling subscriptions. With the good fortune of being able to sell some of Mark Twain's popular books she was able to add to her income. As she traveled she observed; her book is not only a record of her six years as a canvasser but a panorama of six years in the Golden State.
