About this title

Synopsis:

Arthur Anderson says 'The idea of writing a book on my public career occurred to me for two reasons. One was the fact that only two other persons in the history of the state have served as long or longer in the South Dakota legislature. The second was the fact that no other legislator in the history of South Dakota has approached my record of representing the state at national and regional conferences. As the idea of the book took shape in my mind, I decided to add a number of chapters on my Scandinavian background and on my experience as a farmer, automobile mechanic, and businessman. Looking back on the trying years of my youth and the depression, I was reminded of the tremendous challenges I had faced in early and middle life. I also began to realize what a valuable training these years of hard labor and sacrifice had been for public service. So I decided to share many of these experiences with the reader, if for no other reason, to demonstrate the benefits that can be derived from deprivation and hardship."
