About this Item

First Edition (stated on title page). Frontispiece, xviii, 28 chapters (each paginated separately); 7 pp (bibliography); errata leaf taped to rear flyleaf. Original cloth. Very Good, without dust jacket. 'The birth of yeast genetics had a strong Scandinavian clout since besides [Ojvind] Winge (1886-1964), the other prominent figure was Carl C. Lindegren, born in 1896 in Wisconsin, USA, in a family of Swedish immigrants. The most transcendent achievement of Lindegren in connection with yeast genetics was the discovery of the mating types. This led to development of stable haploid cultures of both mating types and served to start the cycle of mutant isolation and genetic crosses that made of Saccharomyces one of the most conspicuous organisms for genetic research. Other important achievements were the discovery of the phenomenon of gene conversion and the elaboration of the first genetic maps of the yeast. The work and the controversial personality of Lindegren have been the subject of an inspiring book chapter' (Julio Polaina, 'Brewer's Yeast: Genetics and Biotechnology', Applied Mycology and Biotechnology, Volume 2, Agriculture and Food Production, 2002; the chapter is R. K. Mortimer, 'Carl C. Lindegren: Iconoclastic father of Neurospora and yeast genetics', in Hall & Linder, eds., The Early Days of Yeast Genetics, 1993, pp. 17-38. Bookseller Inventory # 17268
