About this Item

First Edition (so stated). 8vo: 216pp. Publisher's black cloth, the spine lettered in gilt (slightly dulled), with untrimmed fore-edge; in an illustrated dust jacket priced $2.75. A Fine copy (only very lightly read, if at all), square, clean and tight; in a just about Fine jacket, lightly rubbed at head of spine panel. A superb example of a scarce book. After graduating, in 1943, from Philips Exeter Academy,Vidal enlisted and was posted as a warrant officer in the Aleutian Islands, where his transport ship encountered a fierce arctic storm, and Vidal suffered hypothermia, severely damaging his knee. While recuperating in military hospitals, he wrote his first novel, Williwaw (the title is a meteorological term for a sudden wind out of the mountains), the story of men in wartime, published when he was just 20. Along with Norman Mailer, Vidal was one of the first of returning World War II veterans to be published, and soon after his discharge in 1946, this, his second novel, about a brokerage clerk and his wartime Italian mistress, appeared to tepid reviews (Vidal later said the book was so bad he couldn't bear to reread it). Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Bookseller Inventory # BB0973
