Synopsis: On February 8, 1862, the Kennebec was commissioned as a Union gunboat in the fleet of David Glasgow Farragut's West Gulf Blockading Squadron. On the same day, Josiah Parker Higgins of Massachusetts celebrated his twenty-first birthday by enlisting in the Union Navy and assuming the position of yeoman of the Kennebc. Promptly disenchanted, he expressed his experiences and frustrations in his journal every two or three days for more than two years, itemizing numbers of men wounded, masts broken and bales of cotton seized. he noted Union ships encountered, Confederate ships captured breaking through the Union blockade and deserters and prisoners taken on board. Included is his brush with death not from enemy fire but from a large, displaced hunk of ice on the ship. With horror he described the bombardment of Confederate forts, their retaliation, and rumors of rebel mutiny. News from home brought him solace and, at times, grief. Higgins' journal could have been lost at sea during battle. instead it was recently discovered in the basement of a California home in a dusty cardboard box, buried beneath old photo albums and sheaves of unopened 1940's gift-wrapping.
