Synopsis: This book provides a rich feast of material with African themes. In its pages, you will find games, activities, descriptions of, and links with, a number of African organisations, story-telling, and food and recipes. The material is organised to be inspirational and thought provoking for young people in the UK and beyond. It provides a range of examples of what growing up in Africa is really like, which will assist those working with young people to engage their active participation and widen their horizons. More and more young people are showing a passionate interest in African affairs and culture, particularly as a result of the Make Poverty History campaign and "Live 8". This book provides ways of channelling that interest. It will help young people to move from the local to the global. It is inclusive, and presents materials, information, networking links and activities as positive group experiences for young people in the UK. It offers real-life insights into what co-author Denis Kigongo, from Uganda, calls, "the beauty and diversity of Africa and respect for other cultures."
About the Author: Denis Kigongo is a youth worker and teacher working in the UK. He specialises in using games, music and story-telling with young people in youth clubs and schools. He also organises and travels with youth groups from the UK back to his home country, Uganda. Alan Dearling is a youth worker and full time writer and researcher, specialising in producing materials on youth work, social welfare and social change. For this project he has collected a range of materials based on experiences in Zambia. This book continues Alan's successful series of practical youth work books which include the New Youth Games Book, New Youth Arts and Crafts Book, Youth Action and the Environment, and World Youth Games.
