About this Item

Masahisa Fukase - Yugi (Homo Ludence) Toyko, Chuo Koronsha 1971 Hardback with original dust-jacket and obi. Fukase's first book, with pictures of his wife, the model Yoko (from whom he would later separate, leading to the period of depression during which Fukase would produce Ravens), his family (including nudes), a slaughterhouse, etc. Shoji Yamagishi, famed photograpy critic and editor of Camera Mainichi at the time, stated in part in the books' afterward: "Modern formativism has greatly influenced most photography and accounts for its "reportage" sharp contrast, for the last decade, Fukase has stressed photographic reality by revealing himself physically and metaphysically. He is called Japan's 'autobiographic photographer.' One should mention, that Fukase, who chooses to express himself in darkness, has a much sunnier disposition than the average Japanese." Although Fukase did retreat into darkness later, ultimately becoming unable to photograph or even live unassisted, in this work he gives voice to the full range of his unique photographic vision. Original white paper covered board, original dust jacket, printed in purple and black; original obi (some spotting on inner boards, not affecting pages with images; dust-jacket spine evenly sunned, some sunning to the rear of the jacket as well; original obi has light wear at the edges). Does not include plain plastic cover. This is a difficult to find book in good condition; scarce with original wraparound band. Bookseller Inventory # ABE-1313423708
