About this Item

NORRIS, Frank. Yvernelle. A Legend of Feudal France. Illustrated. Original decorated cloth. Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott Company, 1892. First edition of Norris's rare first book and only volume of verse. Yvernelle is one of the great rarities of 19th century American literature. It was written by Norris when he was a freshman at the University of California, publshed six years before his next book, Moran of the Lady Letty (really his first available book), and seven yeras before his most famous novel, McTeague, a tale of passion and violence published in New York in 1899. Yvernelle was published largely with the help of the author's family who advanced money to the J.B. Lippincott Company. Even though the book was handsomely published in a small edition it never sold well, thus making present-day copies extremely rare--especially because all remaining copies were later destroyed in a great fire at Lippincott's. Other books by Norris which have taken their place in literay history are The Octopus (1901), The Pit (1903), A Deal in Wheat (1903), and Vandover and the Brute (1914), most of which were published posthumously after Norris's early death in 1902. Yvernelle is probably the finest achievement of the J.B. Lippincott Company in the 19th century. Some wewar and soiling to extremities, but a good to very good copy withal.
